National Conference (CALLED23) Recap: Embracing the Call to Serve the Lord in the Present Moment
CALLED23, CCMA’s highly anticipated national conference, was an extraordinary gathering of over 200 campus ministry professionals in the heart of Indianapolis from June 6-8, 2023. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as participants came together to share their passion for campus ministry and exchange innovative ideas. This year’s theme, “Here and Now” challenged participants to rediscover the gift of working in higher education and sharing the Gospel of Christ with students and colleagues.
The conference boasted an impressive lineup of keynote speakers who captivated the audience with their thought-provoking talks. Sr. Josephine Garrett, CSFN, inspired us with her emphasis on joy, while Dr. Hosffman Ospino enlightened us with his expertise in the Catholic Latino experience of young adults. Fr. Peter McCormick, C.S.C., left the attendees with an encouragement to be ministers of hope. An innovation panel, sponsored by Hallow, highlighted innovations in ministry to Latino students, data trends, ministry to Black Catholics and technology.
In addition to dynamic keynotes and interactive workshops, each day was marked by the celebration of Mass. A Holy Hour brought the first night to a conclusion and the Sacrament of Reconciliation was available throughout the event. Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades (Diocese of Fort Waye-South Bend) was the celebrant for the opening Mass while Archbishop Bernard Hebda (Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis) reminded attendees of their noble call to ministry on Day Two. Fr. Peter McCormick, C.S.C. (University of Notre Dame) celebrated Mass on Day Three as the conference concluded.
Prior to the conference, two wraparounds were offered. Petrus Development provided a workshop on best practices in fundraising. The Association of Catholic Colleges & Universities (ACCU) invited campus ministers from Catholic institutions to a dialogue on what campus ministry looks like in 2023 and how best to accompany students.
CALLED23 was a momentous event where campus ministry professionals united, forging connections, and generating a collective vision of serving and nurturing college students in faith. At the conclusion of the event, CCMA announced the location for CALLED24: St. Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A & M in late May, 2024.
