Recharge Your Spirit: Summer Self-Care Tips for Campus Ministers

By Rosie Chinea Shawver

As a college campus minister, we need the summer to recharge. What are you doing to recharge? I was new to the field when I was at the University of New Mexico as the director of campus ministry. I loved the ministry but should have taken care of myself by taking vacations. The lack of self-care through overworking did not benefit me or the ministry. The adage, "You can't give what you don't have," is spot on. What should we do with the remaining time this summer?

  1. Go on a Retreat: This doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. In a world that is loud and full of noise, I find silent retreats to be the most useful. Some retreat centers offer full-day visits at no charge, without the need to spend the night. You can wander the retreat grounds, read a spiritual book and the Bible, and visit the adoration chapel. The peace and solitude can provide profound spiritual rejuvenation.

  2. Spend Time with Family and Friends: Reconnect with the people who matter most to you. These relationships are vital for emotional and spiritual well-being. Whether it's a family gathering, a meal with friends, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, these moments can be incredibly recharging.

  3. Get Away for a Day: Find a place that is recharging for you. For me, going to any beach helps to recharge my spiritual battery. It could be a park, a mountain, or any place in nature where you feel at peace and connected. A day away can do wonders for your spirit.

  4. Take a Vacation: Take a vacation and get away from your home. We know this is not something everyone can do—it is a luxury. However, if you can change your surroundings and seek and see God in another environment, this can help clear your mind and recharge you for the new academic year.

  5. Add More Recharging Activities: Identify other activities that help you feel recharged. This could be anything from reading a good book, practicing a hobby, exercising, or even resting and relaxing. The key is to engage in activities that restore your energy and bring you joy.

Taking these steps will not only help you recharge but will also enable you to return to your ministry with renewed energy and passion. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity.
